A vegan supplement with 21 grams of protein, seven milligrams of iron and seven grams of fibre that tastes delicious — Good Protein, indeed.

Edward Lalonde founded Good Protein in 2019 in Quebec. Lalonde has a background in nutrition, naturopathy and personal training and felt frustrated by the lackluster options in the functional beverage market.

“[It became my] mission to create a plant-based protein drink that was both creamy and rich tasting and not gritty,” Lalonde said. “I wanted mine to taste exactly like your favourite sweet snacks and curb cravings to keep you full longer. That’s why I created Good Protein and I’m so proud to be offering Canadians a core lineup of plant-based, all-in-one shakes in delicious, dessert-inspired flavours.”

I appreciate Canadian brand success stories, high-quality ingredients and plant-based supplemental protein (so I can get in my daily protein requirements), so it just came down to trying Good Protein’s products for taste and texture. I tried many of Good Protein’s flavours and share my thoughts, below. Then share a Q&A with Lalonde to better understand where the brand is now and where it’s going.

All of Good Protein’s flavours are made with high-quality ingredients that I welcome in my diet. They all have the same texture, which isn’t “gritty” as Lalonde set out to do. When blending in a smoothie, I can tell that there’s vegan protein powder in the shake, but it’s not a weird or distracting texture, like some I’ve tried. (Good Protein powders are available on goodprotein.ca and Amazon.)

Q: Why did you choose vegan protein?

A: I chose to use real, all-natural dairy-free plant-based superfoods because it’s easier to digest. You’ll never find anything artificial in our products, only real, all-natural, plant-based ingredients that are GMO-, dairy-, gluten- and soy-free. And with both pre-and probiotics, our shakes are easy on the stomach, so you can say goodbye to post-shake bloat.

Q: What percentage of ingredients are from Canada?

A: The majority of our ingredients come from a variety of renowned suppliers from around the world like coconut milk, exotic berries and Reb-M [a zero-calorie molecule naturally found in the stevia leaf]. But all of our products are made locally in Quebec. We’re passionate about sourcing the highest quality ingredients, many of which are not available in Canada.  It’s what allows us to make products that are so nutritious, while also tasting so good. It’s also important to mention that all of our ingredients are either organic or non-GMO.

Q: What’s your favourite product/flavour?

A: My favourite Good Protein flavour is the Strawberries & Cream all-in-one Superfood Shake. It has that traditional milkshake vibe that reminds me of my childhood but is all-natural, dairy-free and plant-based which makes it easy to digest. I like it simply mixed with almond milk but sometimes I like to add frozen strawberries and bananas, which makes it taste even more like that shake I loved as a kid. I also love our Salted Caramel flavour protein powder baked into waffles or pancakes.

Q: What’s next for Good Protein?

A: We are very excited for the future of Good Protein. In just four years, Good Protein has grown rapidly, achieving over $50 million in annual sales this year and we will reach $100 million in annual sales within the next 18 months, primarily from sales in Canada. As for what’s next, you can expect to see Good Protein on major big box store shelves across the country before the end of the year. As for more growth, I can say we plan to be the biggest super food company in North America.
